The Earth on the left displays the predominant northern
hemisphere summer. The earth spins around the axis (the black
dashed line). Consequently the north experiences longer days
of sunlight. When a flat Mercator map represents this image,
the sunlight displays as a "U" shaped curve. Note
that the North Pole is constantly in daylight during its
summer months.
