2. The World Watch™ setup will create a program group called World Watch™. 3. Begin the World Watch™ program by
double-clicking the World 4. The next step is to properly set the computer system time. Select the Set Date / Time option from the Clocks menu. This will open the Windows system date and time window. Set the appropriate date and time, and press OK. 5. From the Time menu once again, select Current Time Zone. Scroll through the time zone drop down list box and choose your time zone (by name or World Watch™ GMT number). Before moving on, check the Daylight Savings Time (DST) box if you are currently under daylight savings time. For example, the USA is under DST in July; consequently, a USA user would check this box. 6. At this point, World Watch™ is set up for real time. Please be sure to file your registration card and mail it to Express Technologies Corporation on the enclosed form. You will be notified of upcoming products and update information, as they become available. File Menu (Top of Page)Set up Screen Saver (Top of Page)The Setup Screen Saver command in the File
menu directs you to the Windows 3.1 Desktop selections
automatically. From this point, you can scroll through the screen
saver options section of the Microsoft Windows® desktop and select
World Watch ™. Finally, you may set the screen saver time delay. Save Settings Now (Top of Page)This saves the current World Watch™ settings so that the screen saver can utilize them. Exit (Top of Page)The File menu has an Exit command. Choosing Exit allows you to end the World Watch ™program. Exiting World Watch ™ saves your settings, allowing them to be used by the World Watch™ Screen Saver. Display Menu (Top of Page)The Display menu includes commands that enable the user to change the appearance of the World Watch ™ map. Map Features Dialog Box (Top of Page)Choosing Map Features from the Display menu brings up the Map Features dialog box. This dialog box allows you to specify whether or not you want cities, latitude and longitude lines, international borders, the international date line, or clocks to appear on the map. Each option is selected with its own check box. In addition, you may select "No Features" which turns off display of all the above features. When "No Features" is selected, all the other check boxes become grayed.
The clocks that are to be shown must be
specified in the Time Menu’s Display Cities dialog box. The cities
that are to be shown must be specified in the Map Display Cities
dialog box. Cities Dialog Box (Top of Page)The Map Display Cities dialog box is displayed when Cities is chosen from the Display menu. The list box on the left, entitled "Available Cities" shows the names of over 300 cities available for display on the map. The upper list box on the right, entitled "Cities on World Map," shows the names of the cities which can be shown on the world map. The lower right list box, "Cities on Zoomed Maps," displays the names of the cities, which can be shown on all the maps except the world map, i.e., North America or Europe etc. See the View Menu explanation for more information about map views. More than one city name at a time may be selected in the list boxes. "Cities" must be chosen in the Map Features dialog box in order for the cities to appear on the map.
Add, Remove, and Clear Buttons (Top of Page)Each of the two smaller list boxes has three buttons associated with it. They are called Add, Remove, and Clear. The Add button adds all highlighted city names from the Available Cities list box to the smaller list box. It is available only if at least one city name is highlighted in the Available Cities list box and the limit of the number of cities that can be displayed has not been reached. The Remove button removes the highlighted cities from the smaller list box. The Remove button is available only if at least one city in the small list box is highlighted. The Clear button clears all entries from the small list box. It is available only if at least one city is shown in the small list box. Clear Selections Button (Top of Page)The Available Cities list box has a Clear Selections button. The button removes the highlights from all city names in the Available Cities dialog box. It is much easier to remove the selections using this button than to manually remove each selection. This button is available only if at least one city name has been highlighted in the Available Cities list box. For example, if you want Acapulco, Mexico and Zurich, Switzerland to appear on the World map, and only Chicago, Illinois to appear on the zoomed maps. For each of the smaller list boxes, choose "Clear" if any city names appear in the box. Then, if the Clear Selections button is not grayed, choose it to clear the Available Cities list box. Highlight "Acapulco, Mexico" and "Zurich, Switzerland" in the Available Cities list box. Select the uppermost Add button to add the two cities to the Cities on World Map list box. Choose the Clear Selections button to clear the highlights on these two cities in the Available Cities list box. Then highlight "Chicago, Illinois" in the Available Cities list box and select the bottom Add button. This will add "Chicago, Illinois" to the Cities on Zoomed Maps list box. Press the OK button to return to the map views. Choose Display menu’s Map Features and make sure "No Features" is not selected and "Cities" is selected. Upon returning to the map, you should see Chicago on the United States and North America views and Acapulco and Zurich on the World views. Add Custom City Dialog Box (Top of Page)This dialog box appears when "Add Custom City" or "Edit Custom City" is chosen from the Display menu. "Add Custom City" is only available if you have not already entered the maximum number of custom cities. The dialog box allows you to enter or edit information about a city that you have added to the city database ("Custom City"). Use Appendix A to help locate a nearby city for approximate latitude and longitude coordinates.
City Name (Top of Page)Type the name of the city in this box. Be sure to include a comma between the city name and the state or country. For example, type "Iowa City, Iowa" instead of "Iowa City Iowa." World Watch™ uses the comma to distinguish between the city name and the name of the state or country. Time Zone (Top of Page)This drop-down list box displays over 30 time zones available. You should select the time zone in which the city you are adding lies. The numbers in parenthesis are the numbers of hours the time zone lies from Greenwich Mean Time. Daylight Savings (Top of Page)This box allows you to specify whether and
when a city observes daylight savings. If the city always observes
daylight savings, choose the "Always" radio button. If the
city never observes daylight savings, choose the "Never"
radio button. If the city observes daylight savings during only a
part of the year, select the "As Shown Below" radio
button. Then fill in the six drop-down list boxes to indicate the
time of the year when daylight savings is in effect. The top three
boxes, labeled "From", indicate the date on which daylight
savings begin. The bottom three list boxes, labeled "To",
indicate the date on which daylight savings ends. Each row of three
list boxes functions identically. The leftmost of the three list
boxes allows you to indicate a number, such as 1st, 2nd, ... last.
The middle list box allows you to indicate a day of the week or
simply "day". The rightmost list box allows you to
indicate one of the twelve months. Show On (Top of Page)World Map or Zoomed Maps allows you to select the display of the current custom city on either of the world map or the individual zoom maps. You may leave the boxes unchecked if you might want to display the custom location later. All custom cities may be activated and deactivated from the Display menu Cities option. Latitude (Top of Page)Type the latitude of the city in the latitude edit box. The latitude must be between 0 and 90 degrees. Then choose either the "North" or "South" radio button to indicate whether the city is north or south of the equator. Longitude (Top of Page)Type the longitude of the city in the longitude edit box. The longitude must be between 0 and 180 degrees. Then choose either the "East" or "West" radio button to indicate whether the city is east or west of the equator. Edit Custom City Dialog Box (Top of Page)The "Edit Custom City" menu item on the Display menu is available only if you have entered at least one custom city. When you choose the menu item, you are presented with a pop-up menu listing the names of all the custom cities you have added. Choosing one of the cities causes the Edit Custom City dialog box to appear. This dialog box is identical to the Add Custom City dialog box. Delete Custom City (Top of Page)When you choose "Delete Custom City" from the Display menu, you are presented with a pop-up menu listing the names of all the custom cities you have added. When you choose one of the cities, a message box appears asking you to confirm your selection. If you confirm your selection, the chosen city is removed from the database. Colors Dialog Box (Top of Page)The colors dialog box allows you to specify the brightness of the green and blue daytime and nighttime colors. The dialog box is available only if you are running World Watch™ on a system that has more than two colors. Choosing "Colors" from the Display menu opens it. Custom Color (Top of Page)The Custom Color buttons give you color control of every item that appears on the map. Clicking the Custom Color button of the item gives you the opportunity to change the color of that item. Try experimenting with the custom colors. Brightness Box (Top of Page)The large green and blue box with scroll bars is called the brightness box. The scroll bar to the left of the box controls the brightness of the green and blue for areas of the earth experiencing daylight. The colors in the box represent the colors, which will appear on the map. The scroll bar to the right of the brightness box controls the brightness of the green and blue for areas of the earth not experiencing daylight. The nighttime color can never be brighter than the daytime color, but it can be made the same color as the daytime color if desired. Background for City Names Check Box (Top of Page)This check box controls the appearance of city names on the map. When unchecked, city names are written directly on the map, without a background. This option allows you to see more of the map. However, the city names may be difficult to read with some monitors and color settings. Checking the box will write city names over a contrasting background, improving ease of reading but obscuring more of the map. Small Fonts (Top of Page)You may change the size of the fonts used to display city names and the day or date on the map. If the "Small Fonts" option on the Display menu is not checked, Windows system fonts are used. If small fonts is checked, World Watch™ attempts to use a font, which is smaller than the system font. If this option appears to work incorrectly, it is probably because some fonts may be missing on your system. In that case, simply uncheck this option. No Titles Option (Top of Page)The No Titles option is available on the Display menu. When active, the map window appears without a title bar and menu bar. This makes the entire window available for drawing the map and clocks, and is especially useful if your World Watch ™ window is small. You can also activate or deactivate No Titles by pressing CTRL+T or double clicking on the map or a clock. Time Menu (Top of Page)The Time menu includes commands that enable you to specify clocks, which are visible at the bottom of the map and specify the current time zone, date, and time. Clocks Dialog Box (Top of Page)The Clocks dialog box is activated when you choose "Clocks" from the Time menu. This dialog box allows you to specify the cities whose time will be displayed in each of the twelve available clocks. The clocks will appear on the map only if the Map Features dialog box has been configured to display clocks. Twelve Clock Boxes (Top of Page)The dialog box shows twelve boxes, each representing the city whose time is displayed by one of the twelve available clocks. Each box contains a button with a number between 1 and 12 representing the clock number, the city name (or "None" if none is selected), and the daylight savings status. Buttons 1 through 12 (Top of Page)Pressing one of these buttons brings you to the Choose City dialog box. The Choose City dialog box is used to specify a city whose time will be displayed by the clock. City Name (Top of Page)The city chosen in the Choose City dialog box is shown to the immediate right of the button. The clock will display the time in this city. Daylight Savings (Top of Page)Each of the clocks has a Daylight Savings drop-down list box associated with it. The choices in this list box are Default, Yes, and No. The World Watch ™ program contains the most recently available daylight savings data for each of the cities available with the program. However, cities and countries sometimes change the time of year they go into or out of daylight savings time. The Daylight Savings drop-down list box allows you to over-ride the settings used by World Watch™ . Choosing "Default" will cause World Watch™ to use its built-in data about when the city enters and leaves daylight savings time. Choosing "Yes" will cause the clock to display daylight savings time regardless of the internal data of World Watch ™. Choosing "No" will cause the clock to display standard time (not daylight savings). These settings also override any daylight savings data you may have entered in the Custom Cities dialog box. Daylight Savings Indicator (Top of Page)A small indicator in the upper right corner of the display clocks signifies that the location is currently under daylight savings time. The dates at which these adjustments take place are listed in the appendix of the World Watch ™ User's Guide. You define your Custom Cities daylight savings times during each Custom City setup. Choose City Dialog Box (Top of Page)The Choose City dialog box is accessed by pressing one of buttons 1 through 12 on the Clocks dialog box. The dialog box contains a list box of over 300 predefined cities, plus any custom cities you may have added. Highlighting a city name in the list box and pressing the OK button causes the highlighted city to appear on the Clocks dialog box. The clock associated with this action will then show the current time in the chosen city. If you do not want the associated clock to appear on your display, press the "None" button in this dialog box. The Choose City dialog box will close and the word "None" will appear in place of the city name in the Clocks dialog box. Current Time Zone Dialog Box (Top of Page)The Time Zone dialog box appears when
"Current Time Zone" is selected from the Time menu. The
dialog box allows you to specify your time zone. World Watch™
needs to know this information in order to correctly display the
times in other cities and the daylight / darkness pattern on the
map. Setting the Date and Time (Top of Page)Your computer must have the correct date and
time on the system clock in order for World Watch™ to operate
accurately. You may set the date and time directly in Windows
Control Panel or you may simply choose Set Date / Time from the Time
menu. View Menu (Top of Page)The View menu includes commands that enable
you to choose the portion of the world shown on the World Watch™
map. The menu shows a check mark to the left of the currently
selected option. "World" is considered a "World
View." All other options are considered "Zoom Views"
because the view is "zoomed" to a particular part of the
world. For Windows 486DX machines only: HELP! Questions and Answers for World Watch™ Windows 3.1x (Top of Page)This section explains some more common
